SUMMARY:2025 Beachy Keen BioBlitz
DESCRIPTION:North Coast Land Conservancy’s Marine Reserve Program is hosting a monthlong BioBlitz during August. The BioBlitz will take place in and around Cape Falcon Marine Reserve\, located on the Oregon North Coast\, and the adjacent Oswald West State Park. \nA bioblitz is a communal effort to identify and record as many distinct species as possible in a designated area and timeframe in order to collect long-term datasets. \nWant to participate? The first step is to download the iNaturalist app onto your mobile device and join our project in iNaturalist. Then\, any time during the bioblitz\, head down to Short Sand Beach\, Falcon Cove Beach and Neahkahnie Beach to look for various species and document your observations in the app. Even if you don’t know exactly what something is\, don’t worry. Researchers and other users from around the world work to identify all species recorded. \nThe participant who records the most species during the monthlong project will win a special prize. To learn more about the value of community science and how to use iNaturalist\, watch a recording of our 2022 virtual training session. Although we hosted this training in 2022\, the instructions and insights are still relevant for 2025! \nDon’t forget to also share your observations on social media\, tagging North Coast Land Conservancy (@nclctrust)!

SUMMARY:Go Touch Grass! Eelgrass Exploration in Netarts Bay
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS\, Tillamook Estuaries Partnership (TEP)\, and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) for an exploration among the eelgrass in Netarts Bay! During this event\, we will learn about current monitoring efforts and findings\, and we will also get our feet wet as we explore the eelgrass and diverse critters that call it home. This is a family-friendly event that will be fun and appropriate for all ages! \n  \nRegistration is required for this event and will be open starting Saturday\, June 28th!\n  \nWhy Should I Care About Eelgrass? \nEelgrass is incredibly important to our ecosystems\, as it is the foundation for a highly productive food web in our bays. Among other things\, eelgrass has the following functions: \n\nProduces food and oxygen\nImproves water quality but filtering pollutants\nAbsorbs excess nutrients\nStores greenhouse gases (ex. carbon dioxide)\nSupports shoreline structure to mitigate erosion\nActs as a nursery for juvenile fish and other species\n\nPeople are often unaware of these important ecosystem functions and therefore eelgrass is often disturbed and degraded. Offsetting the negative effects to this important species starts with education! \nOn Saturday July 12th\, Tony D’Andrea from the ODFW Shellfish team and Flynn DeLany\, TEP’s Field and Data Scientist\, will speak to the importance of eelgrass\, common misconceptions\, research methods\, and current findings in the area. Low tide will be at 9:18am and therefore\, the event will take place bright and early starting at 7:30am and wrap up by 9:30am. \nParking: \nParking is limited at the Netarts Bay View Point lot. Overflow parking will be at Netarts Bay Shellfish Parking\, which is 0.2 miles south of the Bay View Point lot. If you would like to carpool\, please refer to this google sheet where you can note if you would like to drive/be driven and your contact information. This sheet is not monitored and it is up to attendees to arrange their own transportation. \nAccessibility: \nThere is uneven terrain at this location and the site is not wheelchair accessible. If you would like to attend and have accessibility needs\, please contact danielle@tbnep.org. Prior to the event\, pictures of the site will be located on the Know Before You Go Resource page. \nWhat to Wear/Bring: \nPlease wear boots and clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty! We will be in the wet sand and it will be difficult to walk without proper footwear. These ‘Shared Spaces’ are the focus of 2025’s Migratory Bird Day Celebration.\n\n\nGather at Alder Creek Farm on Sunday\, May 25th for a day of guided bird walks\, ‘Big Sit’ observation station\, kid’s activities and learning opportunities! Together\, we’ll identify challenges birds face in our own community and consider how to make the spaces we share with birds safer and more welcoming. There will be no shortage of fun for bird enthusiasts of all ages at this family-friendly event. Bring binoculars\, or borrow a pair of ours! No prior birding experience is necessary.\n\n\nGuided bird walks will depart from the farm. One will begin at 10AM\, and another at 11:30AM\, following two route options: one on flat terrain and one that traverses up a medium slope to the upper riparian areas above Alder Creek.\n\n\nIf exploring over uneven ground isn’t your thing\, join us at our ‘Big Sit’ station. SUMMARY:Invasive Species Removal at Clay Myers
DESCRIPTION:Scotch broom is an invasive species that outcompetes native plants by taking the water\, nutrients\, and sunlight they need to survive. This highly-flammable\, aggressive shrub reproduces by seed and requires consistent management. \nOn May 18th from 9am-12pm\, Tillamook Estuaries Partnership and Nestucca\, Neskowin & Sand Lakes Watershed Council are partnering with Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) to remove the abundant scotch broom that has taken up at Clay Myers Natural Area. A ranger from OPRD will support volunteers in learning how to effectively cut back the plant\, mitigating the chance for reproduction. \nFeel free to join for the whole event\, or part of it. Be prepared for that! \n \nWhat: The Pacific Northwest is home to some of the most biodiverse intertidal systems\, and more kelp species than anywhere else on earth – come learn about them!  \nHere’s a chance to explore to rocky shores and learn how to identify and sustainably harvest wild seaweeds. Open your eyes to the world of beautiful marine algae\, and gain a new perspective for every beach walk.   \n \nThis workshop will go over tides\, general oceanography\, seasonal ocean conditions\, and intertidal ecology. Students will learn how to identify various PNW seaweeds (about 10-15 depending on location and what’s present). Practice seaweed identification\, learn sustainable harvest techniques\, as well as common processing and preservation methods. See examples of processed seaweeds and great identification and cooking resources.  \n \nWhat else: Foraging requires some significant walking including some potentially difficult terrain\, so please wear appropriate footgear (e.g. tennis shoes\, rainboots\, or other hiking footwear). Whatever you don’t mind getting wet that will also keep your feet stable. For your own safety and comfort\, do not wear flipflops or sandals. Do keep in mind your feet are likely to be in the water at some point\, so rainboots are what I would strongly recommend. \n \nThe Event will happen rain or shine (unless thunder-storming). If the weather looks “iffy” please bring a rain poncho\, jacket and hat. Please be prepared for any and all types of weather\, the Oregon Coast is often not predictable and we will be fully exposed to the elements. DESCRIPTION:Tillamook County Wellness and Tillamook Estuaries Partnership bring you Part 1 of Four Seasons Of Foraging! Throughout the year we will co-host 4 events highlighting the unique foraging opportunities coastal Oregon provides. \n \nJoin us and local educator Alanna Kieffer from Shifting Tides LLC at Barview Jetty for a day of mussel foraging! This workshop will introduce students to rocky intertidal ecosystems of the Oregon Coast. We will discuss tides\, ocean conditions\, and safety and etiquette on the rocks. Students will learn how to sustainably harvest shellfish\, as well as how to clean and prepare shellfish once home.  There will be a focus on foraging mussels and other edibles including barnacles\, and seaweed (seaweed is dependent on the season\, ONLY March-June 15).  \nStudents will learn when and where to look for these organisms as well as how to sustainably harvest\, store\, and process them. You’ll then have time to forage for yourself and ask questions as you go. There will be a beachside cooking demonstration to wrap up the workshop so that you will confident cooking your shellfish when you get home. \nYou will need a shellfish permit\, which can be obtained online from ODFW\, please purchase one before class\, and have it  available on the app on your phone for easy access in case needed. \n \nSpecial Instructions to access the event location: There’s a $10 parking fee at Barview Jetty – if paying this is a financial burden for you but you would like to attend\, please reach out to danielle@tbnep.org. DESCRIPTION:Join TEP & OSU Sea Grant for a family-friendly quest where together we will explore the history and habitats within Kilchis Point Reserve! \nSuitable for all ages\, Quests allow lifelong learners to explore parks\, trails and other outdoor spaces in new ways and at their own pace. At the start of the event\, you will receive a map and directions for your “quest”\, similar to the one that can be found here. We’ll work together to solve a puzzle while learning about Kilchis Point. At the end of each interpretive Quest\, participants find a hidden box containing a logbook to sign and a hand-carved stamp to mark their accomplishment. While quests are generally self-guided\, this time we are bringing together community to complete it together! \nThe event should take about 1.5 hours and the trail utilized for the quest is wheelchair accessible. If you choose to continue walking towards the bay\, terrain varies. Pictures of the venue will be posted prior to the event on the Explore Nature Know Before You Go Resource page so people can plan accordingly. We reccommend sturdy shoes as the boardwalk that is part of the trail can be slippery.

DESCRIPTION:North Coast Land Conservancy (NCLC) and Tillamook Estuaries Partnership (TEP) invite you to join us on Saturday\, March 29th from 9am-10:30am to get a glimpse at the Spring gray whale norhtbound migration! We will begin our hike at Elk Flats Trail\, off of Highway 101 and take the trail out to “Devil’s Cauldron” \n \nThe hike out and back is approximately 1 mile and there is an elevation gain of 300 feet. The trail is often bursting with plant life so wearing long-sleeve clothing and sturdy shoes is recommended. Pictures will be posted to the Explore Nature Know Before You Go resource page so you can properly prepare for the conditions of this trail. \n \nThe parking lot is an unassuming gravel lot just south of the Short Sand beach parking lots. We recommend arriving early to secure parking and if you are planning to meet people there\, to park in the southern Short Sand beach parking lot (where bathrooms are located) and carpooling to the Elk Flats trailhead. \n \nDuring this event\, we will be using scopes and binoculars to look for whales and the abundance of other life that exists in the waters and among the trees. NCLC and TEP staff will speak to our work in the region and the importance of whales for our climate and the marine ecosystems. We can’t wait for you to join us during Oregon’s Whale Watch week!

DESCRIPTION:10 a.m. to 2 p.m.\nWednesday\, Feb. 19\nFisher’s Point Habitat Reserve/Vosburg Creek Property \nJoin NCLC and our partners from the Lower Nehalem Community Trust (LNCT) as we take on English ivy and other various tasks needed at LCNT’s Vosburg Creek Property in Wheeler and NCLC’s Fishers Point Habitat Reserve\, across from the Nehalem Bay State Park. We will spend two hours on Fishers Point and two hours on Vosburg Creek. \nOur primary focus will be using loppers and handsaws to remove climbing ivy\, a non-native invasive plant\, from native trees. When they finally absorb their yolk sac in these next few weeks and “button themselves up” they will be ready to be released and complete their life cycles in the Tillamook Bay\, out to the ocean\, and back to the rivers! \n \nAt this event\, we will gather at Al Griffin Memorial Park where Kyle will bring the salmon and give attendees the opportunity to release them into Patterson Creek\, where they will hang out until they are ready to head to the bay! Our expert guides will take you on a thrilling adventure\, delving into the ancient history preserved in the layers of stone. Get ready to travel back in time and witness the incredible stories written in the rocks of Netarts Bay! \nJoin expert and outdoor environmental geoscience instructor Margery Price on this adventure\, which will include a presentation and walking exploration at various locations around Netarts Bay. Participants should be prepared to drive or carpool to various locations between Cape Lookout and Cape Meares for this event. \nPrice is currently researching the use of pumice as a wastewater filter and has spent time with the US Geologic Survey in Yellowstone and as an undergraduate teaching assistant at a field school in Montana. She prides herself on finding cool rocks anywhere she goes and promises to do the same during this event. \nThis is an Explore Nature Tillamook Coast cross-listed event. Explore Nature is a series of hikes\, walks\, paddles\, and outdoor adventures led by a consortium of volunteer community and non-profit organizations. DESCRIPTION:Tillamook County Wellness and Tillamook Estuaries Partnership bring you Part 4 of Four Seasons Of Foraging! Throughout the year we will co-host 4 events highlighting the unique foraging opportunities coastal Oregon provides. \n \nJoin us and local native plant expert Asa Skinner from Tillamook Estuary Partnership’s Native Plant Nursery on Whalen Island for an afternoon learning to forage and about local ethnobotany! This workshop will introduce students to the basics of finding and identifying berries. Huckleberrys are known to be ready to harvest from this area at this time of year but there are no guarentees! \n \nSpecial Instructions to access the event location: There is free parking by the vault toilets. \n \nPlease be prepared to walk about 2 miles on a trail. Hiking boots or ankle supporting footwear is recommended. There are toilets at the entrance. This event will happen rain or shine! Please be prepared with cold weather gear or rain gear depending on the forcast. \n \nThis is a free event and registration will be capped at 20 attendees. \n \nAccessibility Level: We will be walking on an unpaved trail with potential off-trail walking to find berries. Parking lot is also unpaved and vault toilets are not accessibility rated. Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS members and our partners have been working with SOLVE to host cleanups in the area from Cape Lookout to Cape Meares to Bay Ocean for over a deca \nde. Join us this year and help us protect marine life and maintain the beauty of our coast. This beach cleanup is family-friendly\, and dog-friendly. Volunteers of all ages will find the event fun and rewarding. \nKeep it safe and fun! Remember our ocean shores can be dangerous. Avoid logs in the water. Keep your distance from marine mammals\, and never turn your back on the ocean! If you find any hazardous material\, please alert your Beach Captain. And remember\, it’s more fun to work as part of a team.
