SUMMARY:Invasive Species Removal at Clay Myers
DESCRIPTION:Scotch broom is an invasive species that outcompetes native plants by taking the water\, nutrients\, and sunlight they need to survive. This highly-flammable\, aggressive shrub reproduces by seed and requires consistent management. \nOn May 18th from 9am-12pm\, Tillamook Estuaries Partnership and Nestucca\, Neskowin & Sand Lakes Watershed Council are partnering with Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) to remove the abundant scotch broom that has taken up at Clay Myers Natural Area. A ranger from OPRD will support volunteers in learning how to effectively cut back the plant\, mitigating the chance for reproduction. \nFeel free to join for the whole event\, or part of it. There will be signage at the entrance of the trail so folks know where the group will be. \nTEP will bring loppers and a weed wrench\, but feel free to bring your own removal materials as you wish. Other things to bring/wear include: \n\ngloves if you would like them \nlong pants and long-sleeved shirt (layers if it is hot)\nhiking boots or sturdy close-toed shoes\nWater bottle (we will have a jug for you to refill)\nSunscreen\, hat\, etc. in case it is a sunny day!\n\nDirections \nYou will turn off on Whalen Island Road from Sandlake Rd. and veer right towards Clay Myers Natural Area. You will park in the lot and we will be meeting in the grassy area near the restrooms. We will walk out on the south-most trail\, as you can see in the attached image\, and walk about a quarter mile to the location where we will be removing scotch broom. \n***THERE IS NO CELL SERVICE AT CLAY MYERS*** Please be prepared for this. \nAccessibility \nThere are some photos of this location on the Explore Nature’s Know Before You Go Resource page and more photos will be added of the trail prior to the event. The terrain is uneven and fairly sandy. DESCRIPTION:Spring into action in TEP’s greenhouse! \nDo your part to help recover critical Oregon Silverspot Butterfly habitat. \nTEP is seeking volunteers to care for seedlings that will help restore coastal prairie habitat. These plants will increase the area of existing strongholds and provide pollinator species to the critically endangered Oregon Silverspot Butterfly. \nYou’ll also be able to take free seedlings home to create native pollinator habitat in your yard! \nThe events will be held on various Fridays from March to May and will all take place at TEP’s Native Plant Nursery located on the Port of Tillamook. Volunteers will be given a brief training and then let loose to help thin the overcrowded seedlings and transplant some into bigger pots. This process step is vital for the plants to maximize growth\, and we must get to it within this timeframe. \nWe are extremely excited to open our doors back up to these events\, and we hope to see you there! \nHow to come prepared: \n• Layers – Depending on greenhouse space\, some individuals may work outside\, so please dress for the weather. \n• Rain Gear. \n• Outdoor shoes\, such as boots\, are recommended. \n• Gardening/Nursery gloves\, if you have them. \n• Water and snacks\, even though we will provide some snacks. \nDirections to the site and additional information will be sent to registered attendees the week of the event. \n**Must be 18 or over to attend** We have a fantastic partnership with Oregon Youth Authority and rely on the Camp Tillamook incarcerated youth as our operations crew at the nursery. SUMMARY:2025 Seaweed Foraging with Four Seasons of Foraging
DESCRIPTION:When: April 19\, 10am-1pm \nWhere: The Three Graces (14474 Oregon Coast Hwy Rockaway Beach\, OR 97136) \n*there is not a restroom at this little “parking lot” I’m sorry to say. There is one at the Port of Garibaldi. Be prepared for that! \n \nWhat: The Pacific Northwest is home to some of the most biodiverse intertidal systems\, and more kelp species than anywhere else on earth – come learn about them!  \nHere’s a chance to explore to rocky shores and learn how to identify and sustainably harvest wild seaweeds. Open your eyes to the world of beautiful marine algae\, and gain a new perspective for every beach walk.   \n \nThis workshop will go over tides\, general oceanography\, seasonal ocean conditions\, and intertidal ecology. Students will learn how to identify various PNW seaweeds (about 10-15 depending on location and what’s present). Practice seaweed identification\, learn sustainable harvest techniques\, as well as common processing and preservation methods. See examples of processed seaweeds and great identification and cooking resources.  \n \nWhat else: Foraging requires some significant walking including some potentially difficult terrain\, so please wear appropriate footgear (e.g. tennis shoes\, rainboots\, or other hiking footwear). Whatever you don’t mind getting wet that will also keep your feet stable. For your own safety and comfort\, do not wear flipflops or sandals. Do keep in mind your feet are likely to be in the water at some point\, so rainboots are what I would strongly recommend. \n \nThe Event will happen rain or shine (unless thunder-storming). If the weather looks “iffy” please bring a rain poncho\, jacket and hat. Please be prepared for any and all types of weather\, the Oregon Coast is often not predictable and we will be fully exposed to the elements. There’s a 100% chance you will get wet during this class! *If* conditions day off are not safe in this environment\, we will use what we can to demonstrate\, and teach. \n \nYou will NEED scissors or a knife. I will supply plastic bags but you may want a bucket. Bring a cooler (with ice ideally) to transport your harvest home. Please also bring a water bottle\, snacks and any other refreshments you may want during the Event. This workshop will introduce students to rocky intertidal ecosystems of the Oregon Coast. We will discuss tides\, ocean conditions\, and safety and etiquette on the rocks. There will be a focus on foraging mussels and other edibles including barnacles\, and seaweed (seaweed is dependent on the season\, ONLY March-June 15).  \nStudents will learn when and where to look for these organisms as well as how to sustainably harvest\, store\, and process them. You’ll then have time to forage for yourself and ask questions as you go. There will be a beachside cooking demonstration to wrap up the workshop so that you will confident cooking your shellfish when you get home. \nYou will need a shellfish permit\, which can be obtained online from ODFW\, please purchase one before class\, and have it  available on the app on your phone for easy access in case needed. \n \nSpecial Instructions to access the event location: There’s a $10 parking fee at Barview Jetty – if paying this is a financial burden for you but you would like to attend\, please reach out to danielle@tbnep.org. Go through the campground to the actual end of the jetty (big open parking lot with a view of the beach) NOT the lot before the entrance gate. \nForaging requires some significant walking including some potentially difficult terrain (we will be scrambling down some rocks)\, so please wear appropriate footgear (e.g. tennis shoes\, rainboots\, or other hiking footwear. For your own safety and comfort\, do not wear flipflops or sandals. Do keep in mind your feet are likely to be in the water at some point\, so rainboots are what I would strongly recommend. \nThe Event will happen rain or shine (unless thunder-storming). If the weather looks “iffy” please bring a rain poncho\, jacket and hat. Please be prepared for any and all types of weather\, the Oregon Coast is often not predictable and we will be fully exposed to the elements. DESCRIPTION:  \nSpring into action in TEP’s greenhouse! \nDo your part to help recover critical Oregon Silverspot Butterfly habitat. \nTEP is seeking volunteers to care for seedlings that will help restore coastal prairie habitat. These plants will increase the area of existing strongholds and provide pollinator species to the critically endangered Oregon Silverspot Butterfly. \nYou’ll also be able to take free seedlings home to create native pollinator habitat in your yard! \nThe events will be held on various Fridays from March to May and will all take place at TEP’s Native Plant Nursery located on the Port of Tillamook. Volunteers will be given a brief training and then let loose to help thin the overcrowded seedlings and transplant some into bigger pots. This process step is vital for the plants to maximize growth\, and we must get to it within this timeframe. \nWe are extremely excited to open our doors back up to these events\, and we hope to see you there! \nHow to come prepared: \n• Layers – Depending on greenhouse space\, some individuals may work outside\, so please dress for the weather. \n• Rain Gear. \n• Outdoor shoes\, such as boots\, are recommended. \n• Gardening/Nursery gloves\, if you have them. \n• Water and snacks\, even though we will provide some snacks. \nDirections to the site and additional information will be sent to registered attendees the week of the event. \n**Must be 18 or over to attend** We have a fantastic partnership with Oregon Youth Authority and rely on the Camp Tillamook incarcerated youth as our operations crew at the nursery. DESCRIPTION:Join TEP & OSU Sea Grant for a family-friendly quest where together we will explore the history and habitats within Kilchis Point Reserve! \nSuitable for all ages\, Quests allow lifelong learners to explore parks\, trails and other outdoor spaces in new ways and at their own pace. At the start of the event\, you will receive a map and directions for your “quest”\, similar to the one that can be found here. We’ll work together to solve a puzzle while learning about Kilchis Point. At the end of each interpretive Quest\, participants find a hidden box containing a logbook to sign and a hand-carved stamp to mark their accomplishment. While quests are generally self-guided\, this time we are bringing together community to complete it together! \nThe event should take about 1.5 hours and the trail utilized for the quest is wheelchair accessible. If you choose to continue walking towards the bay\, terrain varies. Pictures of the venue will be posted prior to the event on the Explore Nature Know Before You Go Resource page so people can plan accordingly. We reccommend sturdy shoes as the boardwalk that is part of the trail can be slippery.

DESCRIPTION:North Coast Land Conservancy (NCLC) and Tillamook Estuaries Partnership (TEP) invite you to join us on Saturday\, March 29th from 9am-10:30am to get a glimpse at the Spring gray whale norhtbound migration! We will begin our hike at Elk Flats Trail\, off of Highway 101 and take the trail out to “Devil’s Cauldron” \n \nThe hike out and back is approximately 1 mile and there is an elevation gain of 300 feet. The trail is often bursting with plant life so wearing long-sleeve clothing and sturdy shoes is recommended. Pictures will be posted to the Explore Nature Know Before You Go resource page so you can properly prepare for the conditions of this trail. \n \nThe parking lot is an unassuming gravel lot just south of the Short Sand beach parking lots. We recommend arriving early to secure parking and if you are planning to meet people there\, to park in the southern Short Sand beach parking lot (where bathrooms are located) and carpooling to the Elk Flats trailhead. \n \nDuring this event\, we will be using scopes and binoculars to look for whales and the abundance of other life that exists in the waters and among the trees. NCLC and TEP staff will speak to our work in the region and the importance of whales for our climate and the marine ecosystems. We can’t wait for you to join us during Oregon’s Whale Watch week!

DESCRIPTION:10 a.m. to 2 p.m.\nWednesday\, Feb. 19\nFisher’s Point Habitat Reserve/Vosburg Creek Property \nJoin NCLC and our partners from the Lower Nehalem Community Trust (LNCT) as we take on English ivy and other various tasks needed at LCNT’s Vosburg Creek Property in Wheeler and NCLC’s Fishers Point Habitat Reserve\, across from the Nehalem Bay State Park. We will spend two hours on Fishers Point and two hours on Vosburg Creek. \nOur primary focus will be using loppers and handsaws to remove climbing ivy\, a non-native invasive plant\, from native trees. Other tasks may include disassembling and hauling off unwanted trash from the properties as needed. \nBe prepared for a few hours in the field. We will provide tools and gloves\, but feel free to bring a pair if you have your own to use. Additionally\, bring layers\, boots\, water\, a snack or lunch\, etc. There are no dogs allowed or bathrooms on site.

DESCRIPTION:Come join the Tillamook County Library Garibaldi and Bay City Branches\, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s STEP\, and Tillamook Esturaries Partnership as we release the Spring Chinook that have been growing up in front of our eyes since late October! \n \nOn October 22nd\, North Coast STEP Biologist\, Kyle Wilson\, dropped off Spring Chinook salmon eggs to the Bay City and Garibaldi Libraries. Since then\, anyone who has popped into these locations or visited our Explore Nature social media pages has gotten to seen these eggs transition to alevins to sac fry. When they finally absorb their yolk sac in these next few weeks and “button themselves up” they will be ready to be released and complete their life cycles in the Tillamook Bay\, out to the ocean\, and back to the rivers! \n \nAt this event\, we will gather at Al Griffin Memorial Park where Kyle will bring the salmon and give attendees the opportunity to release them into Patterson Creek\, where they will hang out until they are ready to head to the bay! Get ready to travel back in time and witness the incredible stories written in the rocks of Netarts Bay! \nJoin expert and outdoor environmental geoscience instructor Margery Price on this adventure\, which will include a presentation and walking exploration at various locations around Netarts Bay. Participants should be prepared to drive or carpool to various locations between Cape Lookout and Cape Meares for this event. \nPrice is currently researching the use of pumice as a wastewater filter and has spent time with the US Geologic Survey in Yellowstone and as an undergraduate teaching assistant at a field school in Montana. DESCRIPTION:Join SOLVE\, Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS (www.netartsbaywebs.org)\, Oceanside Surf Co./Current Cafe\, Netarts Oceanside Fire\, and other Tillamook County partners to clean up the areas around Netarts and Oceanside on September 21 from 10 AM – 1 PM. Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS members and our partners have been working with SOLVE to host cleanups in the area from Cape Lookout to Cape Meares to Bay Ocean for over a deca \nde. Join us this year and help us protect marine life and maintain the beauty of our coast. This beach cleanup is family-friendly\, and dog-friendly. Volunteers of all ages will find the event fun and rewarding. \nKeep it safe and fun! Remember our ocean shores can be dangerous. Avoid logs in the water. Keep your distance from marine mammals\, and never turn your back on the ocean! If you find any hazardous material\, please alert your Beach Captain. And remember\, it’s more fun to work as part of a team. SUMMARY:Hike Netarts Spit: Plovers\, Dunes\, and Beach Finds
DESCRIPTION:Hike Netarts Spit: A guided hike focused on snowy plovers\, dunes\, and fun beach finds with the Bird Alliance of Oregon\, WEBS\, and OPRD! \n  \nJoin Bird Alliance of Oregon and Friends of Netarts Bay – Watershed\, Estuary\, Beach\, & Sea (WEBS) to learn about the threatened Western Snowy Plover and Oregon’s coastal ecosystem while hiking the length of Netarts Spit. We hope to observe Snowy Plovers and other coastal creatures on this 13-mile round trip hike. Please bring your own binoculars\, water\, lunch\, and comfortable attire. Participants can opt to join for a portion of the hike if they do not wish to hike the full distance. This is an out-and-back hike along the same stretch of beachline. \nAccessibility\nDistance: 12-13 miles \nElevation Changes: None \nTerrain: Sandy Beach \nAmenities: Flush and Vault Toilets in the campground (limited access on the beach); water is available in the campground; large parking lot with $5 day use fee \nPublic transit: No public transit \nRest stops and pace: We will move at a slow – medium pace\, stopping frequently to look at birds\, washed-up items in the wrack line\, and other points of interest. We will break for lunch on the beach. \nRSVP: FREE event limited to 15 people. \nWhy Western Snowy Plovers?\nThe Pacific coast population of Western Snowy Plovers has been in decline for several decades due to habitat loss\, human disturbances\, and predation pressures. In Oregon\, the population hit a low of about 50 individuals in the early 1990s. Subsequently\, this species was listed as threatened under the Federal Endangered Species Act in 1993. \nDue to targeted recovery efforts in Oregon\, mostly focused on the south and central coast\, the Snowy Plover has bounced back to around 500 individuals in Oregon and are recolonizing traditional north coast nesting sites. \nPlover Patrol engages citizen scientists to monitor plovers on the north coast\, helping Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and Bird Alliance of Oregon track where Snowy Plovers are and how they are recovering to inform management. \nCost: There is no cost to attend this program. DESCRIPTION:What amazing creatures are lurking at the water’s edge? Come out to Oceanside and see! \nFriends of Netarts Bay WEBS staff and volunteers will be onsite in the tidepools to share about the habitats along the coastal edge. Learn about anemone clone wars\, how a sea star eats\, or how hermit crabs steal shell homes from other crabs! From seaweeds to sculpin fish\, there is an amazing world to discover. Come out and enjoy! \nDetails: Wear boots or bring a change of shoes. DO NOT WEAR Flip flops (they are never ideal for exploring tide pools). Look for a table set-up in the grassy area out front the bathroom building. \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is the walk like out to the tidepool area?\n\n\n\n\nCurrently\, there is a nice accumulation of sand from the beach access all the way to the tidepool area. Interpretive Guides will lead participants around the front of Maxwell Point. There is access through a man-made tunnel providing return access even during high tide. \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat animals will we get to see?\n\n\n\n\nEach tidepool tour offers a different mix of wild animals to observe. Species common in this area include ochre sea stars\, granular claw crabs\, acorn barnacles\, sea lemon nudibranchs\, oyster catchers\, purple sea urchins\, six-rayed stars\, tar spot sea cucumbers\, western gulls\, & giant green anemones.
