SUMMARY:Netarts/Oceanside Beach Cleanup: Sunset Edition!

SUMMARY:Phytoplankton Field Day!
DESCRIPTION:Join experts from ODFW as we explore the phytoplankton in Netarts Bay and beyond! This event will combine research findings and expert insights with activities that are fun for the whole family. \nWe will start this two-part event at the Netarts Boat Basin\, where we will learn how ODFW monitors phytoplankton throughout the Oregon Coast by collecting our own water samples (10:00am-11:00am). Then\, we will head back to the Netarts Community Club (11:30am-1pm) for a short “Phytoplankton 101” presentation to provide context for what we find (or don’t find) in our samples. We will have microscopes to take a closer look at our water samples\, as well as stations for creating art and playing games that will help us understand the roles of phytoplankton in the ecosystem. \nPlease reach out to info@netartsbaywebs.org with questions!

SUMMARY:Go Touch Grass! Eelgrass Exploration in Netarts Bay
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS\, Tillamook Estuaries Partnership (TEP)\, and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) for an exploration among the eelgrass in Netarts Bay! During this event\, we will learn about current monitoring efforts and findings\, and we will also get our feet wet as we explore the eelgrass and diverse critters that call it home. This is a family-friendly event that will be fun and appropriate for all ages! \n  \nRegistration is required for this event and will be open starting Saturday\, June 28th!\n  \nWhy Should I Care About Eelgrass? \nEelgrass is incredibly important to our ecosystems\, as it is the foundation for a highly productive food web in our bays. Among other things\, eelgrass has the following functions: \n\nProduces food and oxygen\nImproves water quality but filtering pollutants\nAbsorbs excess nutrients\nStores greenhouse gases (ex. carbon dioxide)\nSupports shoreline structure to mitigate erosion\nActs as a nursery for juvenile fish and other species\n\nPeople are often unaware of these important ecosystem functions and therefore eelgrass is often disturbed and degraded. Offsetting the negative effects to this important species starts with education! \nOn Saturday July 12th\, Tony D’Andrea from the ODFW Shellfish team and Flynn DeLany\, TEP’s Field and Data Scientist\, will speak to the importance of eelgrass\, common misconceptions\, research methods\, and current findings in the area. Low tide will be at 9:18am and therefore\, the event will take place bright and early starting at 7:30am and wrap up by 9:30am. \nParking: \nParking is limited at the Netarts Bay View Point lot. Overflow parking will be at Netarts Bay Shellfish Parking\, which is 0.2 miles south of the Bay View Point lot. If you would like to carpool\, please refer to this google sheet where you can note if you would like to drive/be driven and your contact information. This sheet is not monitored and it is up to attendees to arrange their own transportation. \nAccessibility: \nThere is uneven terrain at this location and the site is not wheelchair accessible. If you would like to attend and have accessibility needs\, please contact danielle@tbnep.org. Prior to the event\, pictures of the site will be located on the Know Before You Go Resource page. \nWhat to Wear/Bring: \nPlease wear boots and clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty! We will be in the wet sand and it will be difficult to walk without proper footwear. We also recommend bringing a water bottle\, layers for unpredictable weather on the Oregon coast\, and sunscreen. \nCost: \nThere is no cost to attend this program. Please consider supporting WEBS and TEP with tax-exempt donations. \nStay connected: \nFriends of Netarts Bay WEBS – www.netartsbaywebs.org\, Facebook and Instagram pages (@netartsbaywebs) \nTillamook Estuaries Partnership (TEP) – www.tbnep.org

It is a cosmic integration — a prayer in motion that delights the senses. Led by Maria Elena Cortes Duran\, dancers’ regalia vibrantly display colorful ancestral symbols and vivid feathers. At the Huehuetl drum\, Eduardo Cruz Torres sets the rhythm for the flight of ceramic flutes\, ocarinas\, and wind whistles\, while traditional Nahuatl rattles\, stones\, seeds\, and bones stir the atmosphere of each performance. \nThe movements and sounds of these spirited presentations mirror the energy that joins each of us with each other and the entire cosmos. SUMMARY:Hike Netarts Spit: Plovers\, Dunes\, and Beach Finds
DESCRIPTION:Hike Netarts Spit: A guided hike focused on snowy plovers\, dunes\, and fun beach finds with the Bird Alliance of Oregon\, WEBS\, and OPRD! \n  \nJoin Bird Alliance of Oregon and Friends of Netarts Bay – Watershed\, Estuary\, Beach\, & Sea (WEBS) to learn about the threatened Western Snowy Plover and Oregon’s coastal ecosystem while hiking the length of Netarts Spit. We hope to observe Snowy Plovers and other coastal creatures on this 13-mile round trip hike. Please bring your own binoculars\, water\, lunch\, and comfortable attire. Participants can opt to join for a portion of the hike if they do not wish to hike the full distance. This is an out-and-back hike along the same stretch of beachline. \nAccessibility\nDistance: 12-13 miles \nElevation Changes: None \nTerrain: Sandy Beach \nAmenities: Flush and Vault Toilets in the campground (limited access on the beach); water is available in the campground; large parking lot with $5 day use fee \nPublic transit: No public transit \nRest stops and pace: We will move at a slow – medium pace\, stopping frequently to look at birds\, washed-up items in the wrack line\, and other points of interest. We will break for lunch on the beach. \nRSVP: FREE event limited to 15 people. \nWhy Western Snowy Plovers?\nThe Pacific coast population of Western Snowy Plovers has been in decline for several decades due to habitat loss\, human disturbances\, and predation pressures. In Oregon\, the population hit a low of about 50 individuals in the early 1990s. Subsequently\, this species was listed as threatened under the Federal Endangered Species Act in 1993. \nDue to targeted recovery efforts in Oregon\, mostly focused on the south and central coast\, the Snowy Plover has bounced back to around 500 individuals in Oregon and are recolonizing traditional north coast nesting sites. \nPlover Patrol engages citizen scientists to monitor plovers on the north coast\, helping Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and Bird Alliance of Oregon track where Snowy Plovers are and how they are recovering to inform management. \nCost: There is no cost to attend this program. Tax-exempt donations to Netarts Bay WEBS to enable programs like this are encouraged\, but not required. \nAn Explore Nature Partnership cross-listed Event
