Join the Lower Nehalem Community Trust\, Heart of Cartm and Nehalem Bay Watershed Council in a marine debris cleanup of the Nehalem River Estuary! \nGrab your family\, your friends\, and prepare to get muddy at the 14th Biennial Nehalem Estuary Cleanup! Register to join one of ten Zone teams in a community-wide effort to collect marine debris from Nehalem Bay. \nWhether you’re a regular rugged explorer or will have kids in tow\, there is a Zone with terrain for most! Zone Leaders will meet you out in the estuary at 9AM on Sunday\, March 8th\, to guide you through a section of the Bay’s edge before returning to Wheeler for a volunteer celebration you won’t want to miss. \nRegistration is required. Learn more and register here: https://www.nehalemtrust.org/cleanup/ \nCleanup Schedule: Begins at 9:00AM and runs until 1:00PM. \n9:00 Arrive at Zone (directions delivered after registration) and check-in. Party at HeartWorks Studio in Wheeler. \nWhat we’ll do: During low tide we will work in teams to walk the high tide lines to collect trash. Boats and trucks will then bring it back to the Wheeler Waterfront Park Boat Ramp to be sorted\, counted\, weighed\, and disposed of. All ages welcome. \nWhat to Expect: There are different cleanup zones around the estuary with different distances and terrain. Please consult the Zone Map to determine which zone is most appropriate for you. We have done our best to include opportunities for diverse abilities. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if we can help to accommodate your participation or answer any questions. \nAccessibility: Each cleanup Zone features its own unique terrain suited for different mobility levels. Please see the Zone list below to choose a terrain suited for your abilities. No bathrooms are available on site at Zones. Off-trail sections optional for viewing.\nCarpool for a short (15 minute) drive from Alder Creek Farm.\nDress for variable coastal weather.\nLearn about local salmon conservation methods!\n\nWhere to Meet: \n\n We will carpool from Alder Creek Farm: 35955 Underhill Ln.\, Nehalem\, Oregon 97131\n\nBeverly is a habitat restoration project coordinator with Tillamook Estuaries Partnership. Her job includes assessing salmon habitats and thinking of ways to make them healthier\, then putting those ideas into practice. Beverly has always enjoyed working with animals and has spent the last several years focusing on salmon. She’s previously worked at both the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife\, monitoring fishing activity and conducting surveys that look for salmon and their redds (spawning sites). She has a big passion for the ecosystems here in Tillamook County and is always excited to find ways to conserve and promote healthy habitats.

DESCRIPTION:10 a.m. to 2 p.m.\nWednesday\, Feb. 19\nFisher’s Point Habitat Reserve/Vosburg Creek Property \nJoin NCLC and our partners from the Lower Nehalem Community Trust (LNCT) as we take on English ivy and other various tasks needed at LCNT’s Vosburg Creek Property in Wheeler and NCLC’s Fishers Point Habitat Reserve\, across from the Nehalem Bay State Park. We will spend two hours on Fishers Point and two hours on Vosburg Creek. \nOur primary focus will be using loppers and handsaws to remove climbing ivy\, a non-native invasive plant\, from native trees. Other tasks may include disassembling and hauling off unwanted trash from the properties as needed. \nBe prepared for a few hours in the field. We will provide tools and gloves\, but feel free to bring a pair if you have your own to use. Additionally\, bring layers\, boots\, water\, a snack or lunch\, etc. There are no dogs allowed or bathrooms on site.

This is a family-friendly event for seasoned and novice birders alike. No experience necessary and birding opportunities for all. We will have some pairs of binoculars to loan and spotting scopes set up to observe birds in different habitats throughout the farm\, from both easily accessible locations and further afield. \nCelebrate: Come celebrate Spring migration on the North Coast and the important efforts that local organizations are making to protect and help birds and the habitats they depend on. \nACTIVITIES\n10 AM – Get to know your N. Coast Birds!\nGuided Bird Walk \n11:30 AM – Get to know your N. Coast Birds!\nGuided Bird Walk \n(Bird walks are 1 hour in duration and occur along gravel\, wood chip and unmaintained grassy areas. Participants may arrive and join for any portion of time between 10am and 2pm. Spotting scopes will be available to help locate and observe migratory and resident species along Alder Creek\, overhead and in the seasonal wetland. Come say hello and learn about our local birds. \nGET TO KNOW YOUR LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS – Interactive tabling displays with local partners working in the fields of conservation\, education and wildlife rehabilitation. Come learn more about community conservation and the amazing projects that are happening around the N. Coast! \nKIDS ART AND ACTIVITIES:\nArt and educational activities for some family fun\, hosted by Hoffman Center for the Arts. \nFacilities and Accessibility: There is a gravel road (approx. 50 yards) from the parking area to the main barn/greenhouse. The path is flat and limited accessible parking is available within 40 feet of the central location of this event. The central area is paved and has a slight raised step at the entrance of the barn. There is an accessible picnic table available on the paved central space overlooking the wildlife sanctuary and seasonal wetland. Accessible portable restroom facility is available on site. DESCRIPTION:EARTH DAY STEWARDSHIP @ ELK MEADOWS PARK\n\nAPRIL 21 @ 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM\n\n\n\nEARTH DAY ACTION!\nSTEWARDSHIP @ ELK MEADOWS PARK\n\nAPRIL\, 21 2024 @ 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere:  Elk Meadows Park\, at the end of Neptune Way\, in Bayside Gardens\, between Manzanita and Nehalem. (Turn south off of Hwy. 101 onto Bayside GardensRoad. Go to Neptune Way\, the last right turn before you reach the Bay. Go to the end of Neptune Way. The park will be on your left).\n\n\nWhat We’ll Do:  We will mulch\, clean up tree cages and enclosures\, chip paths and remove blackberry and scotch broom\, helping the Park’s native plants survive by removing competition. (Who knows\, you may even see some of the neighborhood citizens after whom the park is named!)\n\nWhat to Expect: We will provide tools and gloves\, but you are welcome to bring your own. Please wear sturdy shoes and dress for variable coastal Oregon weather! Parking is adjacent to the park and surfaces are gravel\, wood chips and grass. We will be using hand tools such as loppers\, pruning saws and shovels. There is a raised boardwalk across a small wetland and stairs connecting the upper and lower park areas. This park is owned by the City of Manzanita and stewarded by the Lower Nehalem Trust with the help of the community. There is no restroom on-site but generous neighbors have been known to accommodate if the need arises!  You will be asked to sign the LNCT volunteer waiver to participate in this event.\n\nStatement of Inclusion: We understand everyone learns and experiences the outdoors differently and we welcome collaboration with anyone who needs additional support. We are happy to adjust this event to meet the needs of participants to the extent possible within our capacity. SUMMARY:Nehalem Estuary Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Join this celebrated community event that has been taking place biennially since 1999! Volunteers from near and far unite to remove trash from the Nehalem Bay Estuary and then celebrate at the ‘Sorting Pit’ with food and drink and friends. In 2022 we pulled over 2 tons of trash and hundreds of pounds of recyclables from the Estuary\, including half a canoe\, two refrigerators\, a yoga mat and an entire boat! Let’s do it again! \nVolunteer activities range from collecting debris\, sorting materials\, and helping with set-up and take down. This event is hosted by the Lower Nehalem Community Trust\, Nehalem Bay Watershed Council and Heart of Cartm. \n>>>  REGISTER HERE  <<<\nWhen? Saturday\, March 9th\, 2024.   Orientation Begins: 7:00 am \nCleanup: Starts immediately after orientation and runs no later than 1pm. \nCelebrate: After you finish the cleanup\, hang out at the sorting pit with food\, family and friends. Get your warm chili in a commemorative mug! \nLocation: Wheeler Waterfront Park\, Wheeler\, OR \nWhat we’ll do: During low tide we will work in groups by zone to walk or paddle the high tide lines to collect trash. Boats and trucks will then bring it back to the Wheeler Waterfront Park Boat Ramp to be sorted\, counted\, weighed\, and disposed of. All ages welcome. \nWhat to Expect: There are different cleanup zones around the estuary with different distances and terrain. Please consult the Zone Map to determine which zone is most appropriate for you. We have done our best to include opportunities for diverse abilities. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if we can help to accommodate your participation or answer any questions. \nWhat to bring: Come prepared for a variable coastal weather conditions. Bring a water bottle\, snack and something to carry it in while you’re out at your cleanup zone. Waterproof boots\, work gloves and layers recommended. SUMMARY:Salmon Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join LNCT and Cyndi Curtis from the Wild Salmon Center for a walk along Coal Creek\, a tributary of the Nehalem River\, in the Tillamook State Forest. We’ll stroll along the creek looking for spawning salmon in their annual rite and learn about the efforts underway to protect and restore critical salmon habitat in the watershed. \nThis event includes less than 1.5 miles of walking on a graveled state forest road with a gentle grade to a bridge where we will look for salmon and talk about restoration of the watershed. Participants may opt to venture further over overgrown and uneven surface to an off-trail location to view diverse salmon habitat or may choose to stay at the bridge and watch. If heavy rains eliminate the likelihood of seeing salmon\, we may opt to instead visit a nearby restoration site where we would walk a short distance along a graveled road to see a stream restoration project. All info will be sent to registered participants prior to the event.
