SUMMARY:Chinook Salmon Release at Al Griffin Memorial Park
DESCRIPTION:Come join the Tillamook County Library Garibaldi and Bay City Branches\, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s STEP\, and Tillamook Esturaries Partnership as we release the Spring Chinook that have been growing up in front of our eyes since late October! \n \nOn October 22nd\, North Coast STEP Biologist\, Kyle Wilson\, dropped off Spring Chinook salmon eggs to the Bay City and Garibaldi Libraries. Since then\, anyone who has popped into these locations or visited our Explore Nature social media pages has gotten to seen these eggs transition to alevins to sac fry. When they finally absorb their yolk sac in these next few weeks and “button themselves up” they will be ready to be released and complete their life cycles in the Tillamook Bay\, out to the ocean\, and back to the rivers! \n \nAt this event\, we will gather at Al Griffin Memorial Park where Kyle will bring the salmon and give attendees the opportunity to release them into Patterson Creek\, where they will hang out until they are ready to head to the bay! Throughout the year we will co-host 4 events highlighting the unique foraging opportunities coastal Oregon provides. \n \nJoin us and local native plant expert Asa Skinner from Tillamook Estuary Partnership’s Native Plant Nursery on Whalen Island for an afternoon learning to forage and about local ethnobotany! This workshop will introduce students to the basics of finding and identifying berries. Huckleberrys are known to be ready to harvest from this area at this time of year but there are no guarentees! \n \nSpecial Instructions to access the event location: There is free parking by the vault toilets. \n \nPlease be prepared to walk about 2 miles on a trail. Hiking boots or ankle supporting footwear is recommended. There are toilets at the entrance. This event will happen rain or shine! Please be prepared with cold weather gear or rain gear depending on the forcast. \n \nThis is a free event and registration will be capped at 20 attendees. \n \nAccessibility Level: We will be walking on an unpaved trail with potential off-trail walking to find berries. Parking lot is also unpaved and vault toilets are not accessibility rated. SUMMARY:Mussel Foraging with Four Seasons of Foraging
DESCRIPTION:Tillamook County Wellness and Tillamook Estuaries Partnership bring you Part 3 of Four Seasons Of Foraging! Throughout the year we will co-host 4 events highlighting the unique foraging opportunities coastal Oregon provides. \n \nJoin us and local educator Alanna Kieffer from Shifting Tides LLC at Barview Jetty for a day of mussel foraging! This workshop will introduce students to rocky intertidal ecosystems of the Oregon Coast. We will discuss tides\, ocean conditions\, and safety and etiquette on the rocks. Students will learn how to sustainably harvest shellfish\, as well as how to clean and prepare shellfish once home. There will be a focus on foraging mussels and other intertidal shellfish. We will also briefly discuss wildseaweeds\, harvesting\, seasonality\, and preservation techniques. \n \nSpecial Instructions to access the event location: There’s a $10 parking fee at Barview Jetty. Go through the campground to the actual end of the jetty (big open parking lot with a view of the beach) NOT the lot before the entrance gate. \n \nForaging requires some significant walking including some potentially difficult terrain (we will be scrambling down some rocks)\, so please wear appropriate footgear (e.g. tennis shoes\, rainboots\, or other hiking footwear. For your own safety and comfort\, do not wear flipflops or sandals. Do keep in mind your feet are likely to be in the water at some point\, so rainboots are what I would strongly recommend. \nThe Event will happen rain or shine (unless thunder-storming). If the weather looks “iffy” please bring a rain poncho\, jacket and hat. Please be prepared for any and all types of weather\, the Oregon Coast is often not predictable and we will be fully exposed to the elements. There’s a 100% chance you will get wet during this class! *If* conditions day off are not safe in this environment\, we will use what we can to demonstrate\, and teach\, and potentially move to another spot. \nWhat to bring: You will need a bag (mesh\, reusable grocery bag works great\, or even plastic bag)\, or bucket\, as well as scissors\, a knife\, or gardening gloves\, and a cooler with ice to transport your harvest home. Please also bring a water bottle\, snacks and any other refreshments you may want during the Event. Personal medications and sunscreen are also recommended. \n \nShellfish permits can be obtained online from ODFW\, please do so before class\, and should be available on the app on your phone for easy access incase needed. \n \nThis is a free event and registration will be capped at 20 attendees. \n \nAccessibility Level: We will be walking on the beach and scrambling on large boulders that make up the Jetty. The parking lot is made up of small gravel and dirt. Please see pictures below for more information on whether this event is accessible for you. SUMMARY:Plant the Harvest
DESCRIPTION:Plant the Harvest\nJoin Tillamook Working Lands and Waters Cooperative and Tillamook Estuaries Partnership on the second event of a two-part series to take an educational tour of timber harvest practices in Tillamook County. \n \nTillamook Working Lands and Waters Cooperative (TWLWC) will be leading a free\, informative and educational tour of a clearcut that is ready to be replanted. Then\, participants will get to practice planting a tree! We learn first-hand the many components that go into timber replanting. Topics include research sites\, fire prep\, planting\, tree species’\, and planting. Participants will get to take home a seedling! \n \nThis event will involve walking up to 1 mile on uneven soil. Please wear proper shoes and bring gear for all types of weather conditions. There is no bathroom at the event location. This event is open to families. Expect to be riding in the van for around 30 minutes total. \n \nTHIS EVENT IS AT A PRIVATE LOCATION PLEASE SEE CONFIRMATION EMAIL FOR LOCATION INSTRUCTIONS We will be using a van to access locations along a forest logging road. \n \nPlease note\, this is an educational event and folks with comments and questions off-topic will be directed to other resources or asked to save their questions until the end of the event. \n \nIn addition to the Tillamook Estuaries Partnership waiver included in the Eventbrite registration\, participants will also be required to sign a Visitor Waiver and Hold Harmless Agreement to access private timber land. SUMMARY:Restoring our Estuary - Seed bomb making and planting at Alder Creek Farm
DESCRIPTION:Help us restore Alder Creek\, a tributary of the Nehalem river! Join Lower Nehalem Community Trust\, The Lower Nehalem Watershed Council and Tillamook Estuaries Partnership’s Native Plant Nursery on a plant restoration themed morning. We will have a seed ball building activity in the covered barn and will be planting native plants along the edges of the creek. Participants will get to take home their seed balls filled with seeds from the Native Plant Nursery. \n \nThere are so many benefits to planting native plants! They provide shade to maintain cooler stream temperatures for salmon\, stabilize stream banks to reduce erosion and flooding\, store and release water to lower flood risk and more! \n \nThis event is part of the Nehalem Estuary Month where we will be featuring events leading up to the MARCH 9th BIENNIAL NEHALEM BAY ESTUARY CLEANUP. \n \nThis Event will happen rain or shine. Please bring appropriate footwear for planting on muddy and uneven ground and be prepared for rain. Please bring water and snacks. There is a portable restroom available at the event location. Everything needed for planting will be provided including shovels and gloves. \n \nThis event is suitable for families and children ages 10 +. It will include less than one mile of hiking on moderately challenging terrain. Dive into coastal ecology and oceanography along the Oregon Coast while learning how to set and throw crab pots. Gain a deeper appreciation of all things that make Dungeness crab such a special and sustainable food source in Oregon. You will learn how to ID different types of crabs\, crabbing limits\, seasons\, and much more! This is a free event and registration will be capped at 20 attendees. \n \nAlthough we’ll be along a pier and near the boathouse\, please wear appropriate footgear (e.g. tennis shoes\, rainboots\, or other hiking footwear). The Event will happen rain or shine (unless thunder-storming). If the weather looks “iffy” please bring a rain poncho\, jacket and hat. Please be prepared for any and all types of weather\, the Oregon Coast is not predictable and we will be fully exposed to the elements. The boathouse is sheltered but NOT heated and the dock is not covered. There’s a 100% chance you will get wet during this class! There is a bathroom in the Boathouse\, dogs are not allowed. \n \nWhat to bring: \n\nYou will need a bag (mesh\, reusable grocery bag works great\, or even plastic bag)\nA cooler with ice to transport your harvest home (if we catch lots of crabs!)\nA water bottle\, snacks and any other refreshments you may want during the Event. Personal medications and sunscreen are also recommended.\n\n \nShellfish permits ** For this demo and tasting of crab at the boathouse – folks do not need to buy a shellfish license. *IF* we catch enough crabs that there are plenty for people to take any home\, people would need to have a shellfish license to take crabs home with them. It is not guaranteed that we will catch enough crabs for this. But a yearly shellfish permit for OR residents is 10$ and 30$ for non-residents and would be good until the end of 2024 if you would like to purchase one just in case permits can be obtained online from ODFW\, please do so before class\, and should be available on the app on your phone for easy access incase needed. \n \nAccessibility Level: We will be walking on a boardwalk over the TIllamook Bay. The boardwalk is uneven and can be slippery. The parking lot is medium sized-gravel. There are stairs and a ramp to reach the boardwalk. There are multiple transitions between the gravel and ramp\, crossing train tracks\, crossing the uneven boardwalk.
