This trail is open for your enjoyment anytime you visit the farm–but you won’t want to miss our very special Earth Day guests. \nAll ages are welcome. Gloves\, tools provided. Weather appropriate clothing encouraged. \nAccessibility: This event will take place on uneven ground in a wooded area. Bathrooms and a washing station are available on-site.

DESCRIPTION:Join LNCT and Beverly Scoggin—a habitat restoration coordinator with Tillamook Estuary Partnership—for a walk to look for spawning salmon! We will learn about salmon life cycles\, local habitat concerns\, and what is being done to make those habitats healthier. \nWhat To Expect: \n\nWalk < 1.5 miles over gravel. Off-trail sections optional for viewing.\nCarpool for a short (15 minute) drive from Alder Creek Farm.\nDress for variable coastal weather.\nLearn about local salmon conservation methods!\n\nWhere to Meet: \n\n We will carpool from Alder Creek Farm: 35955 Underhill Ln.\, Nehalem\, Oregon 97131\n\nBeverly is a habitat restoration project coordinator with Tillamook Estuaries Partnership. Her job includes assessing salmon habitats and thinking of ways to make them healthier\, then putting those ideas into practice. Beverly has always enjoyed working with animals and has spent the last several years focusing on salmon. She’s previously worked at both the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife\, monitoring fishing activity and conducting surveys that look for salmon and their redds (spawning sites). She has a big passion for the ecosystems here in Tillamook County and is always excited to find ways to conserve and promote healthy habitats.

DESCRIPTION:Leave it to beavers to manipulate their habitat in a manner that allows salmon and other species to flourish! On the evening of August 7th\, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Beaver Conservation Biologist\, Conrad Ely\, will lead an exploration around Alder Creek Farm to examine beaver habitat and speak to the importance of this species for ecosystem health in Oregon. \nDuring this event\, you will learn to identify beaver activity and their favored tree species\, as well as understanding how beavers contribute to the health and well-being of salmon and other species that rely on riparian areas. \nThis event is hosted by Lower Nehalem Community Trust\, Tillamook Estuaries Partnership\, and ODFW\, and will take place at LNCT’s Alder Creek Farm in Nehalem. \nDirections/Farm Parking: Traveling south from Manzanita\, turn right onto Underhill Ln and continue (please do not exceed 10mph) to the end of the lane. Following signage for the farm\, you will continue along a gravel path until you reach a house opposite a grassy field. Please park in the field. \nThings to bring: \n\nSturdy\, closed toed shoes as we will be walking on uneven terrain\nPants or something that covers your legs as we will be walking through brush and you want to be protected from the bugs and pokey plants!\nWater and sunscreen\n\nAccesibility Information: \nDuring the event\, we will be walking on uneven terrain and along the riverbank. These ‘Shared Spaces’ are the focus of 2025’s Migratory Bird Day Celebration.\n\n\nGather at Alder Creek Farm on Sunday\, May 25th for a day of guided bird walks\, ‘Big Sit’ observation station\, kid’s activities and learning opportunities! Together\, we’ll identify challenges birds face in our own community and consider how to make the spaces we share with birds safer and more welcoming. There will be no shortage of fun for bird enthusiasts of all ages at this family-friendly event. Bring binoculars\, or borrow a pair of ours! No prior birding experience is necessary.\n\n\nGuided bird walks will depart from the farm. DESCRIPTION:Join local conservation\, education\, and community science organizations to learn about and celebrate our birds! \nInsects and their importance to migratory birds is the focus of this year’s World Migratory Bird Day\, a global campaign that aims to raise awareness of migratory birds and the need to conserve and support them. \nWhen? Sunday\, May 26th\, 2024 from 10AM- 2PM \nWhere? Lower Nehalem Community Trust’s Alder Creek Farm\,\n35955 Underhill Lane\, Nehalem\, OR 97131 \nWho? Everyone! This is a family-friendly event for seasoned and novice birders alike. No experience necessary and birding opportunities for all. We will have some pairs of binoculars to loan and spotting scopes set up to observe birds in different habitats throughout the farm\, from both easily accessible locations and further afield. \nCelebrate: Come celebrate Spring migration on the North Coast and the important efforts that local organizations are making to protect and help birds and the habitats they depend on. \nACTIVITIES\n10 AM – Get to know your N. Coast Birds!\nGuided Bird Walk \n11:30 AM – Get to know your N. Coast Birds!\nGuided Bird Walk \n(Bird walks are 1 hour in duration and occur along gravel\, wood chip and unmaintained grassy areas. There are two route options available\, one on flat terrain and one that traverses up a medium slope to the upper riparian areas above Alder Creek). \n12:30 PM – Brown Bag Workshop: eBird and iNaturalist\nBring your sack lunch to the barn and chat with local bird nerd podcast team\, Hannah and Erik\, to learn about using these popular apps to identify\, learn and contribute to community science! \n1:15 PM – Birds\, Bugs and Blooms!\nGuided tour of the Nehalem Ethnobotanical Teaching Trail. \nThroughout the Day:\n‘BIG SIT’ – Grab a seat and join our ‘Big Sit’ station where seasoned birders will help point out species by sight and sound and will keep a running tally of birds throughout the day. Participants may arrive and join for any portion of time between 10am and 2pm. Spotting scopes will be available to help locate and observe migratory and resident species along Alder Creek\, overhead and in the seasonal wetland. Come say hello and learn about our local birds. \nGET TO KNOW YOUR LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS – Interactive tabling displays with local partners working in the fields of conservation\, education and wildlife rehabilitation. Come learn more about community conservation and the amazing projects that are happening around the N. Coast! \nKIDS ART AND ACTIVITIES:\nArt and educational activities for some family fun\, hosted by Hoffman Center for the Arts. \nFacilities and Accessibility: There is a gravel road (approx. 50 yards) from the parking area to the main barn/greenhouse. The path is flat and limited accessible parking is available within 40 feet of the central location of this event. The central area is paved and has a slight raised step at the entrance of the barn. There is an accessible picnic table available on the paved central space overlooking the wildlife sanctuary and seasonal wetland. Accessible portable restroom facility is available on site. SUMMARY:Restoring our Estuary - Seed bomb making and planting at Alder Creek Farm
DESCRIPTION:Help us restore Alder Creek\, a tributary of the Nehalem river! Join Lower Nehalem Community Trust\, The Lower Nehalem Watershed Council and Tillamook Estuaries Partnership’s Native Plant Nursery on a plant restoration themed morning. We will have a seed ball building activity in the covered barn and will be planting native plants along the edges of the creek. Participants will get to take home their seed balls filled with seeds from the Native Plant Nursery. \n \nThere are so many benefits to planting native plants! They provide shade to maintain cooler stream temperatures for salmon\, stabilize stream banks to reduce erosion and flooding\, store and release water to lower flood risk and more! \n \nThis event is part of the Nehalem Estuary Month where we will be featuring events leading up to the MARCH 9th BIENNIAL NEHALEM BAY ESTUARY CLEANUP. \n \nThis Event will happen rain or shine. Please bring appropriate footwear for planting on muddy and uneven ground and be prepared for rain. Please bring water and snacks. There is a portable restroom available at the event location. Everything needed for planting will be provided including shovels and gloves. \n \nThis event is suitable for families and children ages 10 +. It will include less than one mile of hiking on moderately challenging terrain.
